Adventures of Amsterdam
Turns out blogging from Amsterdam means everything on my web page is Dutch! German..? It's ambiguous. After a day in Amsterdam, the thought of another 8 hour overnight flight is making me cringe! I just can't master that "sleeping while sitting" thing. Amsterdam was great today!! I encountered my first embarrassing social blunder, thankfully in the privacy of my own bathroom stall (awkward intro to my story, I know). Turns out picture directions are worth a million words and I should really start paying attention to them so I don't put the toilet seat sanitizer on my hands. Shoot, better luck next time. We took a train to the city and walked around town. I made sure to grab a street vendor hot dog (how American) and a beer (or two) at a local pub! The whole group had a great time! Amsterdam is a beautiful and old
city! Gotta board the next flight, more to come later!! Xoxo

Carly,
ReplyDeleteIn 1975, I too went to Tanzania. I went with two friends who had a mutual friend, name Siki Maeda, who was from Arusha. He was a student at Gustavus and invited my girlfriend to visit Tanzania that summer. I sort of invited myself and we took a 6 week adventure. More about that later. We had many adventures, mishaps, and fun while there.
On another trip, I too went to Amsterdam with some girlfriends I met while on a work trip in England. I remember we rented bikes and rode around the city. by accident we found ourselves in the red light district only to discover they do it all day there. We were beckoned into some pretty seedy looking places. Needless to say, we didn't go but it was pretty funny. Amsterdam is a lovely city and I'm sure you're enjoying your short time there. Probably will make you want to go back for a longer visit.
I recall that it took us some 35 hours of traveling to reach our destination at Arusha and were were completely wiped out. We slept in at our host's home, only to find out that breakfast had been prepared for us at 6:30 am. We got up around 9. It was freshly fried goat kidney and eggs. Even though they were cold, we choked them down and assured Siki's mother that they were delicious (lie!) The moral of the story is to get up when breakfast is made if you don't want to eat cold kidney. Goat is kinda like venison. It has to be eaten hot or it just doesn't taste good. I actually came to like goat kidney but it wasn't very pleasant that day.
I'll tell you more stories as I hear yours. Enjoy your trip and take advantage of any adventure you can.
Love,
Nancy
